Snitzerland's straight track success
8 September 2012
It's full steam ahead to the Coolmore Stud Stakes on AAMI Victoria Derby Day for Snitzerland following her win in today's $220,000 Group 2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington.
The classy three-year-old affirmed her appreciation for the Flemington straight when she overcame a chequered passage to run down Stralia in the 1200-metre event.
It made it two wins and a narrow second from three starts up the straight for the daughter of Snitzel and trainer Gerald Ryan is looking forward to giving her the chance to add to that in the Group 1 race for three-year-olds over that course.
“The Coolmore's always been our aim,” Ryan said.
“She's a good filly and she's got it done (today). She beat some good, strong colts there today and the first two might be all right because they got right away from the third horse. She's going the right way.”
The Golden Slipper runner-up got home by a long neck despite not seeing clear running until around 250m from home.
Ryan and jockey Damien Oliver hatched a pre-race plan to find cover aboard Snitzerland, which they did in the middle of the field, but then had trouble gaining a clear run.
Oliver had to go all the way back to the fence and when she did she had a couple of lengths to make up on Stralia, who had burst clear.
Snitzerland ($1.45 fav) claimed the lead 50m from home and edged away to defeat Mark Riley's previously unbeaten colt, who started at $15, with Rusambo ($15) running on well to claim third, a further 3-1/4 lengths away.
Oliver, who had ridden Stralia to his previous two wins, said it was a performance full of merit.
“Even though she was a little bit held up, I thought she was obviously the best horse in the race, best in at the handicaps and if she was not too far away from them she would be able to pick them up,” Oliver said.
“They quickened really good the last 600, so she chased really well.”
Ryan said Snitzerland would remain in Melbourne with the Champagne Stakes at Moonee Valle on 28 September the next target with the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Classic at Caulfield on 13 October an option if he felt she needed another run before the $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes on 3 November.
